DR. MAC'S COMPUTER CLINIC No.9

BEWARE THE BUGS THAT BITE
TOP-CLASS BUG MEDICINE FOR YOUR PC - FREE !
If you connect to the internet, visit web-sites, and download e-mail, you are in danger of
catching a bug. These internet bugs are called viruses and worms. They range from the mildly
annoying to the totally devastating. Without adequate protection, your PC could become infected.
And without adequate bug medication, your PC could STAY infected. This is a subject you MUST
take seriously.
There are many excellent anti-viral programs on the market, and many of you already have
one installed. Well- known programs are McAfee and Norton AntiVirus. These are very good
programs BUT they cost quite a lot of money
An antivral program is worthless unless it is updated regularly because new viruses
are hitting the internet all the time. All antivirus programs release updates on a
regular basis that you can download off the internet. Unfortunately, most of the
really good programs charge you for these updates after an initial period of, say,
one year.
How would you like a top-class antiviral program, that can scan the whole of your hard drive,
that can scan floppies and CD's for viruses, that allows you to do a complete scan (in DOS)
if a virus prevents you from getting into Windows, that can automatically scan your e-mail,
that scans your critical files every time you boot up to make sure you are safe, and that
releases updates at least once a month for you to download .... ALL FOR FREE !
YES! YES! YES! I WANT IT !
GREAT ! LET'S GET OUR PC BUG MEDICATION
DOWNLOAD YOUR AVG ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM
NOTE : All these steps have been fully covered in previous Clinics. If you are not
sure how to do any of these, go to the Library (link at the bottom of this page) and
brush up on the "how to" And as we have always said over and over again, it really
makes sense to save EACH Clinic as a single file so you can study it at your own
pace without being connected to the internet. Full details are in Clinic No. 2
Here's how to get your AVG -
Create a sub-folder under your main Downloads folder See Clinic No. 4 and 5
-
Rename it to AVG Antiviral (How to rename folders is in Clinic No. 4)
-
When fully ready, click the link right at the end and you will be taken to the Grisoft web-site.
-
Grisoft is the company than makes AVG - it stands for "Anti-Virus Grisoft"
-
Accept the licence terms by clicking on "Accept"
-
Fill in a short form and make sure you give your correct e-mail address. This is important.
-
Download the AVG Free Edition INTO your C:\Downloads\AVG Antiviral folder
(Full details on how to download correctly are in Clinic No. 5)
After the download has completed, go to your E-mail program. Grisoft will send you
an e-mail with your Registration number. You MUST have this number ready when you
install AVG. You will NOT be able to read your e-mails in the middle of installing
AVG, so ...
WRITE THIS REGISTRATION NUMBER DOWN.
Now you can install AVG-
Close all running programs using End It All (Full details of where to get this program and how to install it and use it are in Clinics No. 5, 6 and 7)
-
Open Windows Explorer using the shortcut on your desktop (Creating useful shortcuts is in Clinic No. 3)
-
Navigate to your C:\Downloads\AVG Antiviral folder.
-
Click once on your AVG folder on the left side - and on the right hand side of Explorer you will see the file you downloaded. It will have the coloured AVG icon, the name of the file and an ".exe" extension.
-
DOUBLE-CLICKon this file, and the installation begins.
-
When you get to the third screen, you will be asked to type in your Registration number. If you took our advice and wrote it down from the e-mail, you will have it all ready.
-
REMEMBER - the registration number isCASE SENSITIVE. You must type it in EXACTLY as it looks when they sent it to you. It will ALL be in CAPITALS.
-
Select the options as the program installs, but you can skip opening the "readme.txt" file
Once the program is installed, AVG will say the computer needs to be rebooted so the installation can complete. Click Yes and allow your PC to boot back into Windows.
AND THAT'S IT ! YOUR AVG PROGRAM IS INSTALLED.
PLEASE NOTE : Right
after it is installed, AVG will give you the option to (1) Download the latest update from
the internet (2) Make a set of Rescue Disks and then (3) Do a complete viral scan of your
computer
Please click on " SKIP" for number 1. The program you download will be completely up to date.
Please click on " SKIP" for number 2. Next time we will show you how to make a set of Rescue Disks.
Please click on " SKIP" for number 3. Before doing
a complete viral scan of your PC, you should FIRST close down all running programs using End
It All (yet another good reason to get that program! Go to the Library)
SO ... click "Skip" .... "Skip" .... "Skip" and then exit from AVG either by clicking on the large " X" in the very top right corner OR clicking on the large "Exit" button at the bottom right corner.
You will now see that a shortcut to the main program has been placed on your desktop

AVG 6.0
You will also notice a very small icon appears in your System Tray (next to the clock) -
O.K. NOW LET'S DO OUR FIRST SCAN-
Use End It All to close down all running programs (Full details in Clinics 4, 5 and 6)
-
THEN, double-click the large
AVG 6.0 icon ON YOUR DESKTOP
The main interface appears .... click on the large button-bar "Run Complete Test"
 |
Click the
Run Complete Test
button.
AVG will now start
to scan the whole
of your hard drive
for bugs !
|
Go and enjoy a cup of tea. A complete scan can take anything from half an hour to several hours depending on the size of your hard drive and the amount of data you have on your PC. When AVG completes the scan, you will be shown a summary of what happened.
Remember, before the scan started, you closed down all running programs using End It All, so if you want to continue using your PC after the scan, reboot first to get those programs active again.
Next time we will show you how to make your Rescue Disks and adjust your AVG settings
so that you get the best out of it. But for now, we suggest you TURN OFF the automatic
scanning every 24 hours. Here's how ...
Unless you are totally paranoid, you do NOT need AVG to automatically scan your whole
system every 24 hours! This is fine if your computer is connected to a giant network,
but if you are a home user, scanning your WHOLE computer every 24 hours is over-kill
(and as a Doctor, I had to promise I would "do no harm" !)
To turn this default setting OFF : -
Double-click the littleAVG icon IN THE SYSTEM TRAY (NOT the shortcut on your desktop.)
-
The AVG Control Centre box pops up.
-
Click on the tab labelled "Scheduler"
-
UNTICK the little box "Enable scheduled tests" - this little box must be BLANK.
-
Click on the "Apply" button .... then on "OK" Like this ...
 |
Make sure
the "Enable
scheduled
tests" is
BLANK.
THEN click
on "Apply"
YOU MUST
CLICK "APPLY"
FIRST !
Lastly
click on
"OK"
|
Please make sure you understand ALL the above BEFORE downloading.
O.K. Have you made your "AVG Antiviral" sub-folder ?
Have you got your correct e-mail address to give them ?
Great .... connect to the internet, click this link ... and go get your powerful Viral Medicine!
http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_dwnl2.cfm
(
TIP : DOUBLE-click
this link if you don't connect with a single-click.)
The Clinic opens again next week with lots of tips for your AVG. You will need 2 good,
clean floppy disks, so if you haven't yet followed the advice we gave you last week, get
some new floppies soon!
All the best .... and Happy Computing.
