Hallo and greetings.
If you gave your PC a good Maintenance MOT like I
showed you last week, your computer should be in a much healthier condition!
Just to repeat what we
said last week -- the problem some of you had downloading EndItAll 2 has been solved with a new link that DOES work!
Go to Clinic No. 5 in the Library and use the new link to get your free
download.
Now, a sad clinical fact is that sometimes
computers can crash and even die.
If that happens, you stand to lose all your treasured e-mails,
documents, and other valuable files ... UNLESS you have taken out
"health insurance" by saving that important data.
In this Clinic, we show
you how to take out that insurance by saving your data onto floppies.
A WORD ABOUT FLOPPY DISKS :
You are
going to need good floppies in several of the Computer Clinics. It
really makes good sense to get some brand new floppies.
As a basic minimum, allocate 1 for your e-mails,
1 for documents and 1 for important files (like your Computer
Clinics---which we have always asked you to save as single files on
your PC).
Soon,
some of you will need another 2 or 3 for your Anti-Viral Emergency
Disks, and another one for your boot-up
disk....but we'll get those later.
RIGHT...
CLINIC IS IN SESSION ... LET'S GET SOME INSURANCE !
HOW TO SAVE YOUR E-MAILS
Click HERE to skip to the Windows XP version.

- Put
the disk that you are using for E-MAILS into your floppy drive (the 'A'
drive)
- Open your e-mail client Outlook Express.
- In the top right panel, LEFT-click ONCE
on the e-mail Subject/Header that you want to save :

it. |
- Now, at
the top left of your tool-bar, click on 'File'
and then 'Save As ...':
 |

Title/Header
highlighted, click on

- When you
click on "Save As...", the following box appears:
- If you wish to
call
the e-mail something else, then first type the new name into the 'File
name' box.
Now, click on the little down-arrow at the end of the 'Save in' box
 |
Click on the "down arrow"
at the end of the
"Save in" box.
A drop-down menu appears. Click on 3½ Floppy (A:), then
click on the big
"Save" button. |
You will
hear a 'clunk' sound as your floppy drive activates, then a 'zrrr
.... zrrr' sound as your e-mail is being "written" (copied)
onto the floppy.
Good work!!
You've just made a 'floppy copy' of your
important e-mails.
If you want to save copies of more e-mails, simply repeat the steps.

Good work!!
You've
just made a 'floppy copy' of your important e-mails.
That's all there is to it.
If you wish to make copies of other e-mails,
simply repeat the process.
As you go
through the remaining sections of this clinic, you will become more
familiar with the steps and the panels you will see as you save other
files to floppy disks using your particular version of Windows.
The
Doctor recommends you practice the following :
SAVING DOCUMENTS
Let's say you have typed an important letter using Microsoft WORD and
you want to save it:
- Your first step is to put the floppy that you
use for DOCUMENTS into your floppy drive.
- DOUBLE-click the Windows Explorer
shortcut on your desktop (we showed you how to make special shortcuts
in Clinic No. 3) and find the Word document you want.
In this example, I want to save an important letter I sent to the
Tax-man. So, LEFT-click just ONCE to highlight it :
 |
LEFT-click once on the document
you
want to save.
Hold your mouse within the blue section and RIGHT-click once |
- When you RIGHT-click,
the following menu appears: Hover your mouse pointer over the words 'Send
To...' and another side menu appears.
- Click on
3½ Floppy (A)
 |
Hover your mouse over the words
'SEND TO' .... and then .click on '3½'
Floppy (A) |
'Clunk....Zrrr.... Zrrr' ....
and your document gets written to the floppy and saved!
NOTE: Your letter will still be in its original place.
'Send To ...' actually means 'Copy to
...', so an exact copy of your letter will be written onto the
floppy and saved.
HOW TO SAVE
IMPORTANT FILES
We are going to save one of our Computer Clinics:
-
Put the floppy you use for IMPORTANT FILES into your floppy drive.
- Double-click on your special "Computer Clinics"
folder that we taught you how to make in Clinic No. 2 (go to the
Library to learn how if you haven't made it yet.
The "Computer Clinics" folder opens and inside are all the Clinics you
have saved so far (including this one) - all of them are saved as a
single file.
 |
Double-click on this folder to open it.
Inside will be all the Clinics you have saved as a single file. |
- LEFT-click
ONCE on the Clinic you want to save to your floppy :
 |
LEFT-click
ONCE on the
Clinic you
want to save.
Hold your
mouse in
the blue area
and RIGHT-click
once.
|
- When you
RIGHT-click, the same menu and side-menu mentioned above will pop up.
Just as
before, click on 'Send To ....' and then '3½ Floppy (A)'
'CLUNK .... ZRRR .... ZRRR '.... and your file is saved onto your
floppy!
WELL
DONE!!
Be sure
to label each of your floppy disks carefully ---- and then to
store these Health Insurance Policies in a safe place!
Now,
if something awful DOES happen to your PC, you will always have copies
of your important documents and e-mails.
Dr. Macs Quick Tip
- PRINTING:
If you
don't have a printer, save the document you want onto a floppy and take
it to a library close to you. Virtually every library has a computer -
AND A PRINTER. Most only charge a pittance per page - so you could get
a whole Computer Clinic printed out -- in full colour-- for a nominal charge.
(An even
cheaper way? Take your floppy to a friend who has a
printer !!!)
N.B. Since a week has passed since the last Clinic, it's time
to give your PC another good, healthy MOT!
Remember to close down
all running programs using 'EndItAll2' and then
run scandisk (for Win 98 to ME) or chkdsk (for Windows XP) If you missed it, full
details on these scans are in Clinic No. 7
You should run scandisk or chkdsk at least once a
week.
Next time we are going to
look at a another critically important Health area - VIRAL PROTECTION. So until then---
Happy Computing ... and see you at the next
Clinic!
