DR. MAC'S COMPUTER CLINIC No.6
Hallo
again! I bet you're all rearing to install the "End It All 2"
program you downloaded last week! As I told you last time, End
It All 2 is an incredibly useful program to have - we will be
using it in a lot of future Clinics.
If you have NOT downloaded End It All 2" yet, please
study Computer Clinic No. 5 thoroughly. You can find it in the
Computer Clinic
LIBRARY. The link is at the bottom of the
page.
NOTE: "End It All 2" is the latest version of "End It All.
In the examples in this clinic and for any future references,
where the words "End It All" appear, please apply (or assume)
"End It All 2."
The End It All 2 program is "zipped" - so we need to UN-zip
it before we can use it.
DR. MAC'S JARGON BUSTER:
In order to reduce the size of a file ,
they are very often "zipped" - this simply means that they are
compressed by a special program that makes them smaller. The
most common program used for this is called WinZip. The
file you downloaded is called "enditall2.zip" The ".zip" tells
you it has been compressed using WinZip
NOTE: Windows XP has its own built in 'unzipping'
program called the Compressed Folders Facility (or CFF). To skip forward
to those instructions, click
here
Windows 98 Version
First we must UN-zip the file.
Many of you already have the WinZip program on your PC, so you
can skip the next part and get right on with unzipping and
installing the End It All 2 program.
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE WINZIP, FOLLOW
THESE STEPS:
And remember - all of these techniques were covered in
Clinics No. 4 and 5, so visit the LIBRARY and refer to those
Clinics if you don't know how to do any of the following steps
:
- Create a sub-folder under your main "Downloads" folder
and call it WinZip
- Clink the link below and download the Winzip program
into your WinZip folder.
- Once the file has fully downloaded, go to your WinZip
folder.
- Inside will be the downloaded file :
winzip"X".exe ("X" will be the version number)
- DOUBLE-CLICK this file and Winzip installs itself.
Follow the instructions on the screen.
- When it comes to configuring Winzip, make sure you
select the option to "Enable shell extensions"
- To do this, double-click on the Winzip shortcut icon on
your desktop
- Now click on "Options" - click on "Configuration" -
click on the "System" tab at the top - then make sure ALL
the little boxes under "Explorer Shell Extension" are
ticked.
To download WinZip, make sure you are
connected to the internet, and then click this link : http://www.winzip.com/
- When you get to the Winzip website, look for the link to
download the program.
- This will be an evaluation version. However, you can
keep this for as long as you like provided it is ONLY for
personal use on your OWN computer.
UNZIP AND INSTALL "END IT ALL 2"
- Open Windows Explorer (use the short cut on your
desktop - we showed you how to do this in Clinic No. 3).
- In the LEFT-hand panel, click on the "+" sign next to your
"Downloads" folder to expand it, then Left-click once
on the "End It All 2" folder.
- In the RIGHT-hand panel you will see your zipped file :
enditall2.zip
- Hold your mouse pointer over this file and
RIGHT-click once.
- The following menu appears. If you look towards the top,
you will see three Winzip icons. Each one gives you an
option. Select the MIDDLE option : "Extract to folder
C:\Downloads\End It All2\enditall2"
 |
Left-click this middle option
"Extract to folder C ..." etc.
|
- A new folder called "EndItAll2" now
appears. It looks like this :
 |
DOUBLE (Left) click the new
"enditall2" folder |
- The folder will open and inside will be three files
 |
DOUBLE-click on the "Install.exe"
file. Follow instructions on the screen.

SPECIAL NOTE FOR WINDOWS XP
USERS:
Software installations (such as Enditall2 and
Winzip) should be done from an account with Administrator permissions.
Otherwise the programs may fail to install correctly or might not be
available to all users of the PC.
IMPORTANT!! When browsing the web, using e-mail or doing
any other on-line activity, it is best you do so while using
an ordinary User account rather than an Administrator
account. This will help to minimize the possibility of hackers and other
ne'er-do-wells gaining access to key system files and possibly having
the authority to change them---or to infect your system with viruses,
trojans, worms, hijackers and other malware while you are online.
USING WINDOWS XP'S COMPRESSED FOLDERS FACILITY
TO UNZIP AND INSTALL "END IT ALL 2"
Windows XP does not need to use Winzip. This section
will show you how to use Windows XP's 'Compressed Folders Facility' to
unzip the "enditall2.zip" file. These same steps also would apply to
'unzip' any other .zip folder.
If you think you might like to install and use
Winzip anyway (and why wouldn't you?), follow the instructions given in the "IF YOU DO NOT HAVE WINZIP..." section above.
Follow these steps to use Windows XP's Compressed Folders
Facility to unzip the "enditall2.zip" file:
- Open Windows Explorer (use the short cut on
your desktop - we showed you how to do this in Clinic No.
3)
- In the LEFT-hand panel, click on the "+" sign next to
your "Downloads" folder to expand it, and
Left-click once on the "End It All 2" folder.
- In the RIGHT-hand panel you will see your zipped file
:
enditall2.zip
- Point to empty space in the RIGHT-hand panel and
right-click once.
- A menu will appear. Position your mouse pointer over
the word "New" and hold it there. A list will appear next
to the menu.
- From this list, select "Folder" by pointing at it
with the mouse and left-clicking.
- A folder icon will appear at the bottom of the right
hand pane with the name "New Folder" highlighted--ready to
be over-typed. Type in a name, ie: "End it all 2
unzipped"
YOU'VE DONE IT ! END IT ALL 2
IS NOW INSTALLED ON YOUR PC !
O.K. One last thing to do!

desktop.

- A side menu appears listing all the programs on your PC
- Unfortunately, Windows doesn't put things in
alphabetical order! So ....

you need to, hold your mouse on the little upside down
triangle at the bottom of the list of programs. Keep
scrolling down .... until ....
- Right at the bottom you will find EndItAll2

HOLDING YOUR MOUSE BUTTON DOWN!
- NOW, while holding your mouse button down, move the
cursor UPWARDS until you get to the alphabetically correct
place for End It All 2 to be - then RELEASE your mouse
button.

alphabetize the Programs list in Windows XP, open your
Programs folder via Start> Programs, then RIGHT click
anywhere in the list. In the next menu, LEFT click on 'Sort by
Name' and ....Presto!! Alphabetical order.]
