DR. MAC'S COMPUTER CLINIC No. 12

Emergency Boot Disks for Windows 95, 98 and ME
Use your Windows Boot Disk to launch the AVG "SOS" Rescue Program
Hallo and greetings. Just as it's important to have good viral protection,
it is also critical to have an Emergency Boot Disk - an EBD). EBD's are also called
"Rescue Disks" or "Start-up Disks" If you can't boot into windows - you have to have
one of these! If you ever need to fix problems on your hard drive in DOS (because you
can't get into Windows) you need an EBD. If you ever run into terrible problems and
have to re-install Windows, you need an EBD - WITH CD-ROM SUPPORT!
SO - let's make one!
REMEMBER - DON'T USE AN OLD FLOPPY - DON'T TRY TO "SAVE SPACE" AND USE THE FLOPPIES YOU SAVE YOUR E-MAILS AND IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS ON! USE ONE GOOD, CLEAN, NEW FLOPPY.
BOOT DISKS for Windows 95A, 95B, 98, 98SE and ME
If you installed Windows yourself, you were asked if you wanted to make an Emergency
Start-up Disk. Some of you did this. Or, you may have got a Windows start-up disk when
you bought your computer. But, the disk you made or were given may have a serious health
problem!
For reasons known only to Microsoft, Windows 95 makes an EBD that does NOT include
CD-ROM drivers! This means that if you ever had to format your hard drive and
tried to re-install Windows 95 from your Windows CD again - you couldn't! Your
Windows 95 CD would sit in the CD drive and never start up! Amazing, isn't it!
(Some people would use stronger language!)
And again, for reasons only Microsoft can answer, Windows ME does NOT include
the facility to manually transfer System files to a floppy. Amazing, isn't it!
All versions of Windows allow you to make your own Start-up disk. Open up "Control Panel"
then double-click on the "Add/Remove Programs" icon and on the box that pops up select the
"Startup Disk" tab. However, please keep in mind the limitations above - especially
the inability of the Windows 95 disk to access the CD - ROM.
We suggest you download one of the following files and make your OWN boot disk.
Please make absolutely sure you download the correct file for your version of Windows
You can check your version by RIGHT-clicking on the "My Computer" icon on your desktop.
A little drop-down menu will appear. Click on "Properties" at the bottom - and the next
box that pops up will clearly show you what version of Windows you have installed.

(TIP: If a single-click doesn't connect, then DOUBLE-click the link)
-
Remember, when the Download Manager box asks you if you want to "Open it" or
"Save it to disk ..." select SAVE TO DISK.
-
You can either download and save this file onto your desktop OR you can save it
into a special folder you make under your main "Downloads" folder
(Strongly recommended! Full instructions are in Clinic 4 and 5 It looks like this
:
 -
Remember the lesson in Clinic 11 ? To make sure this file is
virus-free, you can
RIGHT-click over it and on the menu that pops up, select "Scan with AVG"
-
When ready to make your Windows start-up boot disk, DOUBLE-CLICK on the file.
-
The following box appears :
 |
Put your nice clean floppy into the
A (floppy) drive and then
click on O.K.
|
-
Your EBD/Emergency Start-up disk will now be made. You can see the progress :
 |
When the progress bar reaches
100% your Windows EBD/Boot-up
floppy disk has completed and
this progress box will disappear.
|
-
It is critically important that you make sure your start-up disk is virus-free.
So, when the disk has been made, leave it in the floppy drive. NOW ...
-
DOUBLE-click on the LARGE AVG (Grisoft Anti-Viral) icon on your desktop (NOT
the little icon in your systray next to the clock.)
-
When the main AVG interface opens, click on ...
 |
Click the Run Removable Media Test button
|
-
On the next box that appears, click on the A: Floppy drive button :
 |
Click on the A: Floppy Drive
button. AVG will now scan
every file on your floppy.
It should be virus-free!
Now, you can CLOSE AVG
|
-
It is imperative that you NEVER boot with a disk that has a virus.
Now you know your EBD is virus-free (AVG has just tested it) you need to
WRITE PROTECT your floppy.
-
Take your floppy out and look at the top left and right corners.
There are two little "windows" at each corner - one you can see through, the other you can't.
-
There is a little slider below the window you CAN'T see through.
SLIDE IT UP UNTIL
IT LOCKS. Now, you can see through BOTH little windows.
-
Your floppy is now "write protected" This means that no further data -
including a virus - can be "written onto" the floppy. It is now completely virus
free and safe.
Label your floppy clearly - Windows Startup Boot Disk - and keep it
in a very safe place!
WELL DONE - you've now got a Windows EBD/Start-up disk that has the ability to boot your
computer, carry out many useful functions, transfer System files AND it will enable you
to access your CD-ROM drive when you are in DOS.
As with the AVG Rescue Disks, having a Windows Start-up disk could literally
save your computer's life if things go badly wrong and you can't boot into Windows,
or you need to do a repair job in DOS before booting back to Windows. This typically
happens when new programs are installed or you make various upgrades - only to be
followed by BIG problems!
In the next Clinic we will show you how to start working in DOS using your Emergency Start-up Boot Disk. You really might need it one day!
USING YOUR WINDOWS START-UP DISK WITH AVG
Some people could not get AVG to fully format and transfer System Files onto the first,
No 1 AVG Boot Disk. As explained above, we have identified this as a limitation of Windows ME.
NOT TO WORRY! You can use your Windows Start-up Disk instead of the No.1 AVG Boot Disk!
N.B. YOU STILL NEED THE SECOND, AVG "SOS" RESCUE DISK.
So ... please review
Clinic
10 and then proceed as follows:-
Open the MAIN AVG program in the usual way.
-
Click on "Service" and then "Create Rescue Disks"
-
Proceed until you get to the screen with the three options - "Continue, Format It, Cancel".
-
Place a good quality, new floppy into the A drive - BUT THIS TIME DO NOT CLICK ON "FORMAT
IT" as we asked you to do in Clinic 10. (This works for Windows 95 and 98 users but NOT
for Windows ME!)
-
For owners of Windows ME - CLICK ON "CONTINUE"
-
This will create the SECOND AVG Rescue Disk. Label it "No2 - AVG Rescue Disk"
O.K. NOW, LET's MAKE SURE YOU CAN USE YOUR AVG SOS RESCUE DISK IN CASE OF EMERGENCY.
REMEMBER, IF YOU WERE ABLE TO MAKE THE FIRST AVG BOOT DISK, THEN YOU WOULD USE THAT ONE.
HOWEVER, YOU CAN ALSO USE THE WINDOWS BOOT DISK YOU MADE ABOVE. HERE'S HOW ...-
Close down your PC and then switch it completely OFF using the main On/Off switch.
-
Place your
WINDOWS START-UP DISK into the floppy drive.
Turn your computer ON using the main switch. Your floppy will now start booting.
WINDOWS ME ONLY : Your computer will boot to the Options Menu. You cannot use your mouse
in DOS, so use your "down" arrow to "go down" to Option 3 - "Start computer without
CD-Rom Support"
When Option 3 is highlighted, press the "Enter" key on your keyboard. This key is
also called the "carriage return" key. Programs will load from the floppy and you will
then see the "A" Command Prompt.
WINDOWS 95 and 98 : The boot disk you downloaded above will take you directly to the "A" Command Prompt.
This is what the "A" Command prompt looks like in DOS :
 |
It's called the
Command Prompt
because you can give
"commands" (instructions)
here. We're going to give
an instruction to launch
the AVG Rescue Program.
|
-
When you get to the A command prompt, carefully REMOVE the WINDOWS boot disk
and put in your No 2 AVG RESCUE DISK.
-
Now - type in avg and press the big "Enter" key on your keyboard.
Do NOT type any spaces - do NOT try to use bold letters - do NOT try to do
ANYTHING fancy! Just type in avg like this :
 |
That's all you have to do.
Type in avg and press
the "Enter" key.
|
-
Your AVG Rescue Program will load and you will be presented with the AVG Screen.
Please refer to Clinic 11 for instructions on what to do next IF you want to scan
and clean your computer.
-
More than likely you will NOT want to do a full scan and clean-up at this stage.
You only need to use your AVG Rescue Disk if a virus prevents you getting into
Windows, or disables the use of programs in Windows. BUT, at least you now have
the peace of mind that you CAN access your AVG Rescue program!
-
O.K. Take your AVG Rescue Disk OUT of the floppy
drive and put BACK your Windows
Start-up disk.
When the Windows Start-up disk is back in the floppy drive, press the letter "X"
on your keyboard. (Pressing "X" will allow you to eXit from AVG)
The AVG screen will disappear and you will be back at the DOS A:\> command prompt.
Now, you want to leave DOS. REMOVE the Windows EBD from the floppy drive ..... hold down both the "Ctrl" and the "Alt" key ... and - while still holding both the Ctrl + Alt keys down - press the Delete("Del") key once .... and your computer will restart and boot back into Windows. Well done!
Ladies and gentlemen - unless you have a photographic memory - make sure you both SAVE this
whole Computer Clinic as a single file for easy reference in the future (full instructions
are in Clinic 2) AND print this whole Clinic out so you can
follow all the steps and get "hands on" practise. If you haven't got a printer, see my TIP
in Clinic 8
CRITICAL UPDATE : AVG has just released a new update to counter a new
strain of the destructive "Magistr" virus. MAKE SURE YOU GET THIS UPDATE ...
TODAY! (How to Update AVG is in Clinic 10)
Best wishes and Happy and Happy Computing!
