I don't feel 50

Despite its importance and waves of reports and initiatives, 17 million people in the UK still don’t go online and a very, very significant number of those not online are older people.

Remember a guy called Tony Blair he used to throw our money around in the hope of finding solutions? In 2000 Tone promised “universal access” for everyone by 2005 and kindly promised £250 million for disadvantaged communities to go online.

But government agencies and traditional charities who were given the task aren’t much fun, they suppress rather than encourage older people, concentrating on “technology” and not the uses of “technology.”

Older people were told to stand in the corner, shut up and fed ideas by those who know best. So, lots of older people told those who had come to help them with the internet stuff “to piss off” - a phrase invented by older people it’s how we say we don’t want to be patronised.

Now the government has started another circle of conferences, workshops, reports and all the other paraphernalia to tell old people about the wonders of the internet. But won't have a clue when lots of older people ask "it's amazing but what will do for me?"
