Hi I am currently thinking about having a tiled background on my webpages after seeing sumthing similar elsewhere. Ive found an image that could work but I cannot figure out how to make it tile without it appearing in little individual squares, can anyone help me?
I have put the page that I've done on the net so you can see what I mean, its here: www.a1roofingservices.co.uk/tiletest.html Thanx craig ps I am happy at the moment to achieve the above using any method, however I am trying to build my site using CSS techniques ultimately ('trying' being the operative word here!!).

A tile that's going to be used as a web page background needs to be what's called a 'seamless' tile. That means, it's designed so that one will fit against another one so you can't see the edges.
If you put "background tiles" or "webpage background tiles" into Google, it'll bring up loads, usually free for use. Don't know if you'll find any roofing ones though! |

To be honest a background image as shown tiled or not would drive me mad.
Why a tiled image, why not use a single large image of a tiled roof and tone it down. The image as is would detract from the page content from being easy to see. My home page is a seamless tile, but the two links below use a single image, that have been toned down to compliment the page content. http://www.petersassortment.idf50.co.uk/site1/index.htm http://www.petersassortment.idf50.co.uk/site3/index.htm

OK sky and peter I think you're probably right that the tiled background I was thinking about might be 'a bit much'.
However thats not a bad idea of yours peter (sorry sky, here we go again lol). But how do you 'tone an image down' and how big does it need to be to 'fill the page' horizontally and vertically? craig PS Out of curiosity sky, are u saying you can't 'make' your own seamless tiled background from a small graphic such as the tiles one I found, but instead you have to get one off the net for instance that someone's already somehow made seamless?

OK you can do it in most graphics programs like PSP, Photo Shop,
Irfanview etc. The size I would use is 1024x768 being a standard web design size. The tool that is the easiest to use is the Gamma correction tool. As a test use Irfanview as its free and most people have it. Open a picture/graphic you wish to use, resize to the size above, click image in the tool bar. Click on enhance colors, in the pop up window you will have two images. The controls to use are under the R/H image, use the middle one "gamma correction". Adjust for the desired effect, then save the image.

Here is a quick screen shot, just as an example of the method.
You can play with the Contrast and Saturation also.

How about modifying one of these.
You may find others, put Roof Tiles into Google search then click the picture tab. Or take your own picture of a roof.

Quote:
Course you can make your own tiles... I make all of mine. But you do have to make sure it will display seamlessly, that the design on the edge of one tile will fit along the edge of another tile without the join showing. The roof tile graphic you have will never do that, because the tiles on it are in perspective. Personally, I'd be very wary about putting any sort of bold tile or background image on a business site... it's not very professional. |
