I have a domain name with Easily.co.uk.
They offer a web design proggie for £30, which makes it very easy for a beginner to build a website, and upload it to the net. Has anybody any experience of this kind of thing ? |

I only have my Domain name with Easily, I don't use their web space or programs.
On the link below you will find some good free editors, the ones I recommend are on my first post. Get "CSE Validator Light" regardless, very handy to check your code. If Easily have an on-line up-loader use that, and or. if they allow FTP get this free FTP program "FTP Commander" Why spend £30 when you can do it for nothing, that the IDF Motto "Free". http://www.idf50.co.uk/clubhouse/viewtopic.php?t=41001

Hi Peter,
Thanks for the advice, I also have Dream-weaver 6 and front page, are either of these any good. If I used either of these I would still have to have a host site, or could I use IDF50 to get started ? |

Dream-Weaver is the way to go,
version 6 may have some out of date tags in it, but will still work OK. Front Page uses some none standard code and is not supported by some servers. Although Front page is good I would not use it for the above reason. Most Pro's use Dream-Weaver, I use MX version and those on the link plus, Note Pad. Every Post in this room and contains valid information to help you. Also go to the IDF Archives you will find a tutorial in there and other info. If you need assistants just ask.

Dream-Weaver operates virtually the same as any other version of Dream-Weaver.
The only changes are mainly html code tag updates and the interface you see on screen may look different between versions. With any editor always check your work in a Browser. Go to your local library and get a book on Dreamweaver MX. Just play with it and see how it works, you cant do any harm. BTW you can configure MX to look and work like an older version, if that helps you at all.

Hi robert
Nothing to be scared of at all. I'm working on getting together some tutorials on first websites and Dreamweaver, so you've arrived just at the right time! Have a look at Yorkshire Carper's posts, he's just in the process of building a site in DW as well. Your first step is do draw a rough sketch on paper of how you'd like your site to be laid out, and sort out what content you want on your page. If you're able to scan it and post it in here for us, so much the better, then we can sort out constructing the basic page layout. Like Peter said, you can build your site and test it on your own computer before you need to worry about getting hosting to put it online. But no need to pay £30 for a program if you've got Dreamweaver. (And your avatar is spot on for a web designer trying to get their site to work in Internet Explorer!!!

Hi Skyrunner,
Thanks for the encourageing post, used to have a website called yesteryear that I built useing Frontpage. It was a history of how the village I lived in evolved through time, I still have all the old photos I cadged of people on my HD. I now live in a small village in West Wales, and I thought I might do a site comparing the two villages. My son had his own puter business, and I used his server as my ISP for everything, but he sold his company to an American firm, he is retired now, not bad for 44 years of age !!!! he used to help me a lot, but he moved to the south of France 3 years ago so he cant pop round like used to. I must admit FP seems to be a lot more user friendly than DW, and the old grey matter ain't wot it used to be. Look forward to your tutorials, and hope to speak to you again, and again, and again, and again. Why have the emoticons started appearing down at the end of my posts , instead of at the end of a sentence where I try to put them PS.... I also use Xara 3DX to Make hedings, logos etc 8) Funny thats put the Emo where I wanted it. |

Hi robert
Knowing what you want to put on your site is the major step towards getting it all started. Have you thought about how you want to lay out your home page? Just a rough idea at this stage. How many other pages on the site? You'll soon get used to Dreamweaver when you start playing about with it. All these big programs look confusing at first, and I don't think anyone gets to know everything about them. Also, web design and construction is a complex subject. So we're going to go one step at a time. I get that thing with the emoticons as well! It's okay if you're typing your post into the box and you pop one in, but if you try to add them later, they always go at the end, and you have to cut and paste them in to where you want them to go. That doesn't happen on other forums. :? As I suspect you guessed looking at my New Year siggie thing, I've got Xara3D as well. Great little program, isn't it?
