Default Help with percentage layout in CSS please?

Hi
Can someone tell me how I go about changing my current pixel sized layer (boxes) to percentages so as not to change the size/location of the layers.
The page I refer to is here
http://www.a1roofingservices.co.uk/new_index.html

Cheers
Craig

OK as you are no doubt finding out like I am, CSS is not like using the easy HTML.
Below is a link that Sky sent me that explains it all from start to finish.
In HTML its normally done with tables setting one cell to 100% called dynamic tables.
CSS does it a different way as far as I know, see the link below.
I am learning CSS myself so I cant give you a definitive answer.

http://www.subcide.com/tutorials/csslayout/index.aspx

As I said before you can convert from CSS to Tables and visa versa.
So its possible to convert to tables do what you want then convert back to CSS.
Not tried it so don't know what the result would be.

Basically, you'd go to where it says (for example) "400px" and change that to (for example) "80%"
But are you sure you want to do that? I'm not sure what you're trying to achieve, but it may not have the effect you expect.

Looking at the page you have, it seems that you need a container div (DW calls it a layer) of a fixed width of about 880px and all your little boxes can be absolutely positioned within that so they stay in place. Then the container div can be given auto margins so it always centers itself in the viewer's browser, whatever their screen resolution is.

What contend do you intend having in the little boxes? Will it always be the same?
Where do you want your navigation? Horizontally under the header?
How many other pages are there going to be on the site?

We need to get all the content lined up ready to go

hi
Thanx for all this again sky and just to say at this point I've only just got rid of the flu/stomach bug too! hence why Ive not got back to you about your first tutorial. I am still not fully fit though and will need to be if I am gonna have any chance of getting to grips with this , so please bear with me, questions will follow for sure and hopefully with your assistance I/ we can all benefit from your experience.
I intend to go through the first lesson and your commens about centering content and layers (divs) in the following few days and will seek help again soon as i think i need to.
Mean time you might like to know Ive made some alterations to my homepage which is now here : www.a1roofingservices.co.uk/index.html
Hopefully the changes Ive made will go some way to answering your questions on how i basically want my page/s to look etc. The main thing is though that I still feel i would like to centre the page within the browser window of various size monitors and so i need to go away now i guess and try to get to grips with that eh!

Thanx
craig

Sorry about the delay Craig, would you believe it, I've now got the most stinking cold!!!!! Think it's the "Little bit Extra" I picked up in Tesco!!! I can't do anything for coughing and sneezing... I feel a bit like this...

That's why tutorial 2 hasn't appeared yet. But after a week, this cold can't go on much longer, so you'll soon be getting some answers.

I've had a look at your latest page, and your design is very impressive, with a suitable look for a business page. (I hope everyone else reading this has had a look on the link.)

But you need to get yourself a copy of the Firefox browser, so you can test your sites in that and Internet Explorer. You'll find that, at the moment, in Firefox the text in the little center boxes is too low, so some of it can't be seen. Don't worry, I know why this is, and it can be sorted quite easily.

Looking at the code for your page, one thing strikes me straight away, you've lost your DOCTYPE at the top of the code. This must be there for the page to display correctly. All the code is a bit of a mess now, with a lot more divs than you need, and all the styles in with the body of the content. I suspect this is more down to Dreamweaver than you, and is a result of "trying things out" in design view.

Once again, sorry for the delay, as soon as I can type without sneezing, I'll write out in full how you can start with a clean DW page and lay out your site with clean code and styles that will give you control over every element on your page. Centered too. (Strewth... what am I letting myself in for! )
