Default Any dreamweaver users here?

Hi
I am having a go at my first webpage using an older version (no. 4) of dreamweaver.
My question is about 'layer's and is simply:

How do I remove a layer that has content in it from a webpage, I have tried right clicking and hoping to find a delete option (naievely I guess!) but none exist's?

One other point is I understand that dreamweaver 8 is the current version and I wondered if anyone might have a spare copy kicking about lol....'cheeky' yer I guess so, but hey, if you don't ask you dont get?
Any like minded people who believe in the 'power of sharing' here but who might want to remain anonymous, please private message me. All expenses will of course be covered.
Craig

Dreamweaver 4 is not to old as yet as it uses HTML 4,
although some of the code has been superseded,
don't use Dreamweaver 3 as it uses out of date code.
I use Dreamweaver MX.

Now to your question, I am afraid I don't know what you mean by Layers and how to remove.

I am guessing now that you are using WYSIWYG side of it,
and have inserted a graphic or a picture and want to remove it.

If you copy and paste the page code on here or PM it too me,
I will be able to see what the problem is.

The problem has to be seen to resolve it.
If my guess above is right, that section of code that calls for the graphic has to be deleted.

If my guess is wrong please give more info on what you mean by Layers.

hi pete
thanx for your offer of help with the code etc but to be honest I think it would be best if I could find out how to remove the layer, which in this case holds some text (but it could be a picture) by using the dreamweaver wysiwyg option itself so that I will know how to do the same in the future should I ever need too. I don't really want to get too involved with the code side of things.

So if anyone can help with my original question.....

Craig

As I said I can only guess on the info supplied, as I cant see what you are looking at.

What ever you term as a layer could be a "Table" a "Frame" or "Code" that is calling for an object to display.

As you are using the WYSIWYG side of it, try placing your cursor to left of the object L/click and select,
"delete", "cut" or "clear" from the tool bar edit button.
I dont know which of the three is available in DW4 under edit,
in MX its "cut".

There is another way but that means editing the code.
But you can see what happens when you try the above,
if you use the split view so you see the page and the code.

Before doing anything save the page you have first,
so if it goes wrong you can recover and try again.

Thanks again peter but I definitely think this needs to be addressed by someone with Dreamweaver knowledge . I am not a techie person at all but the term 'Layer' means a box similar to a table and in it you put your text/pics whatever. These 'boxes' can be placed anywhere and a webpage and can overlap or have gaps between them, anything. Obviously this makes setting pages out much easier and easier still than using table.
Therefore your suggestion to place the cursor to the side of the object requiring removal won't work cos in this case it puts the cursor over another layer (box) with something else in it.

So again, are there any dreamweaver users here who can help re my original 'layers' question.
cheers

I use Dreamweaver all the time,
I now have a rough idea what you have and what you are looking at.

I will try and replicate what you have, it sounds like you are using in-line frames.

If I could see the code you have it would be a lot easier to resolve.

I use Dreamweaver MX Studio, I have never seen layers in it or when I had DW 4.
That's not to say its not there though, I have only seen layers in Graphics programs.
With any problem with web-pages its best to post the page code for analysis.
Only you know what you are trying to achieve and can see the page and what the problem is.
Those trying to assist cant see it unless the code is posted.
Its like trying to do a jigsaw puzzle with a blindfold on.
If you go to code view of your page in DW4, select all, copy and past it into this post.
Select "disable html in this post" and submit.
If you do that I can paste it into my DW and assist you with removing the problem object, OK.

Hi Yorkshire Carper.

This works in Dreamweaver 8, so I expect it'll work in version 4 as well.

Click inside your layer, so it highlights the blue surrounding box. Then place your cursor right ON the blue surrounding box, so the cursor changes to that four-pointed "move" icon. Then click, and the blue surrounding box will be selected, (and will have those little re-sizing squares around the edge.)

Then hit the delete key on your keyboard, and bingo.... Your layer, (and all it's content) has gone.

Let me know on here if you continue to have a problem.

Well you learn something every day, I have never heard of layers before, thanks Sky.
Yes I have used in line frames, place holders and absolute positioning for content boxes,
but layers is a new term to me, will check it out to see what the code difference is.

Update
Yes I have just checked.
The term "layers" is what I know as using "Absolute Positioning" using X and Y coordinates as per DHTML.
So to remove them do as Sky has advised you.
