Default re transparent Gif's

Hi guys

How do I change the background colour of a GIF image to the same colour as my webpage's background colour, so as to render the image's background 'transparent?

Craig

PS I have Paintshop Pro 8 and Photoshop 6 along with Microsofts own image editor.

PPS Will the same technique work on a Shockwave image?
