Hi Craig
The best way to go is use a dedicated FTP program, I have recently found a very good free one, use the link below. http://www.ftftp.com/products.htm More info and screen shots on this link. http://www.fasttrackftp.com/products.htm Its free for personal use, in the black section on the left, click top link to free version. Should they change there minds at a later date get FTP commander, another free version. http://www.internet-soft.com/ftpcomm.htm Vertualy identical but does not edit on the server. Both upload and download, I would say download both programs. I have both of them and both very easy to use.

OK a possible reason may be this, but don't know it as fact.
Dreamwever 4 is an older version and the FTP section may not be compatible with XP. You could try removing it and reinstalling it to see if that solves the problem. To change your display name you can ask Sarah, its possible that you may have to reapply with the new name. Only Sarah can give a definitive answer to that one. BTW the FTP programs I suggested are far superior than Dreamwevers, in my opinion that is.

OK first point there are many sites that have info on dreamweaver, this link is the main one with a printable tutorial.
Click HERE If you want other sites Google for them with "dreamweaver 4". Second point just send a PM to Sarah stating what you want to do.

I use Dreamweaver, but I don't as a rule download from my site... I usually just upload a new version of the file on the remote server and it overwrites. (Actually, I use a separate FTP program for this.)
But this is from the HELP files for my version of the program, which is Dreamweaver MX. Getting files from a remote or testing server The Get command copies files from the remote site or testing server to your local site, as follows: If you’re using the Check In/Check Out system (that is, if the Enable File Check In and Check Out option is selected), getting a file results in a read-only local copy of the file; the file remains available on the remote site or testing server for other team members to check out (see Using Check In/Check Out). If you’re not using the Check In/Check Out system (that is, if the Enable File Check In and Check Out option is not selected), getting a file transfers a copy that has both read and write privileges. Note: If you’re working in a collaborative environment—that is, if others are working on the same files—you should not turn off Enable File Check In and Check Out. If other people are using the Check In/Check Out system with the site, you should use that system as well. You can get files by selecting files in either the Local or Remote view of the Site panel. If the Remote view is active, then Dreamweaver copies the selected remote files to the local site; if the Local view is active, then Dreamweaver copies the remote versions of the selected local files to the local site. To get only those files for which the remote version is more recent than the local version, use the Synchronize command (see Synchronizing the files on your local and remote sites). Dreamweaver records all FTP file transfer activity. If an error occurs when you are transferring a file using FTP, the Site FTP log can help you determine the problem. To display the FTP log: Select View > Site FTP Log. To get files from a remote or testing server: In the Site panel, choose a site from the Site pop-up menu. If you’re using FTP to transfer files, click the Connect button to open a connection to the remote server. If a connection is already open (indicated by the Disconnect button), skip this step. If the remote files are visible in the Remote pane from a previous connection, clicking Connect isn’t required; when you click Get, Dreamweaver connects automatically. Select the desired files to download. Usually you select these files in the Remote or Testing Server view, but you can select the corresponding files in the Local view if you prefer. Do one of the following to get the file: Click the Get button on the Site panel toolbar. Choose Get from the context menu. Choose Site > Get. Note: If the file is currently open in a Document window, you can also choose Site > Get from the Document window. A dialog box appears, asking if you want to get dependent files. To download dependent files, click Yes; to skip them, click No. If you already have local copies of the dependent files, click No. To stop the file transfer at any time, click the Cancel button in the status dialog box. The transfer may not stop immediately. |

Thanks for that Skyrunner you solved the problem perfectly for me...
Craig PS I might be getting back to you with more Dreamweaver questions as I've only just started to use it!

Craig you may have noticed that although both Skyrunner and I use Dreamweaver MX.
We both use a dedicated FTP program, I still say thats the best way to go. A dedicated FTP program is far easyer to use than the embeded one in Dreamweaver. I use the ones I posted above to control the IDF free web space. You have nothing to lose by trying them, you can log on to your site independantly of Dreamweaver. High light a file on your PC click the upload arrow or high light a file on your site click the download arrow, its as easy as that. Tip 1, dont rely on Dreamweaver to show how your page will look always open your work in your browser. Tip 2, use a screen resolution of 800x600 when working on a webpage, see my post "Why 800x600" in this room.
