Thats a fare bit of web space, enough for a large site, so if you intend to put your pictures on it, you have plenty of room. Right here we go. I don't know about NTL and how the access to that web space is done, check on there site, it will be one of these two. General info for all members They may use a File manager (provided by them) similar to IDF or they use FTP a program to upload files. They may even allow for both methods, I have a link for a good free FTP program. Now Frontpage is good but adds a lot of non standard MS stuff, so I dont use it, I will give another link to a good free one. That said play with what you have, make a working webpage on your PC first, then upload it not before though. I use Dreamweaver plus the free one above plus MS Notepad, Notepad is the best tool for website code work. All the info you require is in this room, Free webspace room and in the IDF Archives including links for the programs and tutorials. I will post some links on this thread including the above, later. To one and all help and assistance is available just ask.

Some links.
The web space info for NTL is on there site but vague. http://www.ntlworld.com/toolsservice...pace/index.php FTP there version on NTL is charged for here is the free one. http://www.internet-soft.com/ftpcomm.htm HTML editers two good free ones, I have and use both. http://www.alleycode.com/ http://www.nvu.com/ Don't forget Notepad very handy for code work and editing, I have it on my task bar. Also useful for composing and editing posts on IDF, far better than using the clipboard.

I am with NTL as well. You need to copy your site to upload.ntlworld.com using your main userid and password with an FTP utility (as advised by CPS). You are not allowed sub-directories so all of your site must be in one folder. once loaded you will be able to access your site at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/uuuuu.uuuuuu/ where uuuuu.uuuuuu is your userid. Happy for you to pm or skype me if you want any help.

As CPS says, construct your site on your own computer, keeping ALL your files for your site in one folder. Make sure all your file names are in lower case and contain no spaces. (It's normal to be able to have sub folders in your site folder, but as bunnysan has found NTL don't allow it, keep everything in the main folder.)
To upload your site to the internet, as mentioned, you need 2 things, Firstly the address of your online server, in your case the NTL server. This is usually something simple like ftp.ntl or whatever, NTL should somewhere provide this for you. Secondly, you need a little program called an FTP program. This handles the transfer of files up to the internet, and they usually look a bit like Windows Explorer, with two sections, the files on your computer in one section, and your webspace area in the other once you have logged onto your NTL server. Once you have logged on, getting your stuff up there is just a case of selecting your files in your computer section and clicking the appropriate "upload" button so all your files copy into your webspace. (You should see them all appear in the other section.) I've had a look at the NTL site, they seem to recommend an FTP program called Terrapin, which costs £19.99. I would imagine this would be already configured to link to NTL's server. I hope this doesn't seem too complicated, it really is a straightforward process one you come to do it. Warning... Playing about with web sites is addictive!!!!! |

If NTL supports Frontpage you can use it to upload your site. Click on File > Publish and fill in details that NTL supplies.

Hi All,
Well I`m astounded at the replies and I thank you all. I had a look at NTL but could not find the answers so I E mailed them, waiting for reply. I do have adobe golive, is this better than front page ? Your right about becoming addicted, I spent all Sat building a three pager ready for uploading and it works ok in my browser with links etc. (my Wife was not happy ) about the Sat I mean. I thank you again, Bryan |

Bry - I also use Adobe Go Live and quite quickly I found it very easy to understand. I have Dreamweaver but I prefer the GoLive.
Good luck with it all.

One thing to watch out for and that is your browser is very forgiving regarding any coding errors.
What works on your browser may have link errors, what I mean by that is this. Some links that the HTML editer may have used, may link to the file path on your HD, like to an image file. So when uploaded that can cause a file or page not to show, as the link tells it to look for it on your HD and cant find it. Its just a point to look out for it may not happed but it can. If you encounter any problem when uploaded we can check it for you.
