I have some web space (from Eclipse) and don't know how to put on a page. I have down-loaded 'SmartFTP' but I need to design a page for it to upload. I have also got 'Weborama' a freeware prog to design pages which I have not even opened yet.
Can anyone advise me 1.) Is Word 97 any good for creating a Web page? 2.) Can I create a section of the web site that is only accessable by a password? For privacy 3.) Having put up a web page can I get rid of it if I don't like it and how do I do this? Many thanks PAUL . . .

Hi Paul, and welcome to the bewildering, frustrating, wonderful world of web design!
Firstly, to answer your questions... Well, the current version of Word can be used to design web pages, by saving your files as HTML, but Word isn't really very good, it has a tendency to produce too much unwanted code. I'm not sure about Word 97, have a look to see if you can save your files as HTML, which is what you need to be able to do. Yes, pages can be password protected, but we're getting onto slightly more advanced stuff here. Have a read of this link. http://personalweb.about.com/cs/secu...12password.htm Yes, it's perfectly easy to get rid of a page you don't want, you just delete it off the server. When connected to your web host, your FTP program shows the files on the server, just select the files you want to remove and delete them. By now, you're possibly feeling a bit bewildered by it all. Don't be, it's not as complex as it seems at first. The first thing you do, is sit down with a paper and pencil, and work out what the content of you page should be. What do you want to say? How do you want it laid out on the page? What additional pages do you want to link to? What about pictures? Colour scheme? It's usual to create your website on your own computer, and don't worry about uploading it to your web space until it's all built and working properly. Make yourself a new folder somewhere, and put all the stuff for your site into this folder. You can create sub-folders inside this folder for images etc if you want, but make sure everything is in there somewhere. Now, you have to decide if you are going to create your site by coding your own HTML, or do you want to learn to use a WSIWIG style program, ('What-you-see-is-what-you-get' ...more like desktop publishing layout.) I've never seen Weborama, so I don't know what it does, but if it's for creating web pages, I should open it up and have a good look through it, and look at it's help files, try to decide if it's the sort of thing you could learn to work with. Don't worry if it seems complicated at first, you'll learn as you go along. Remember, we are here to help you. |

Hi phellyer
As Sky points out it all seems a bit bewildering at first, but that is soon overcome. You will make many mistakes and we all do that, they are generally small one's and very hard to spot, so please ask us. One small tip all ways use lower case in your coding, this is becoming more important as the use of capitals will not work in the future years. This also eliminates many coding errors, use capitals in the the visible page text by all means, but not in code. This is a very good book, its out of print at this time but can be purchased at Amazon very cheap. Short Order HTML by Molly Holzschlag, ISBN 0-7897-2049-3 Very easy to follow for beginner and expert alike.
