Under the right motivation, I can cuss a blue streak that is said to have enough incandescent properties to light up a small city.

The absence of oil? Then of course you refer to utter chaos and anarchy in the streets. My credentials for such a scenario?
"A shotgun a rifle and a four wheel drive." |

Harness all the hot air of liberals and socialists to drive power station turbines-- and overload the national grid!

A decent sized four wheel would have enough space to carry a small wood fired boiler, with a steam engine under the bonnet!

My uncle Dawson will do fine.
He lives on a 'rock farm' in the Canadian Shield. The same farm my Grandfather and Grandmother lived on. Until about 1980, he didn't have a tractor. He farmed with horses. He has cattle and sells some milk. He has beef and pork which he now puts in the freezer, but in the future would either hang in the back shed, or put up in jars, or smoke or....He has chickens. The leather for the horse harness comes from the beef, and the tannery, and the fuel for the horses comes from the land. He has several rifles. He's an excellent shot. Deer are plentiful. Humans are not. I expect he'll take in his immediate family, but that farm can only support about that many people. |

OK, here is my idea of the way it may go providing the run down is slow enough to be managed. As oil then natural gas begins to become in short supply, as it will eventually, the price will go up until what little is left is too expensive to be any real use or value. Electricity production via nuclear, wind, water and the small remaining coal, will go up in order to provide for a transport system that will increasingly become of a guided variety, trolley buses and even trams will make a big come back, as so will the electrification continue on the railways. However, nuclear will not last for ever as the supply of nuclear fuels will eventually dry up, so also will coal. Harnessing electrical energy directly from earth static, or sunlight will be a major research priority, as also will other natural forms of energy. We all may have to get used to the idea that not much can be done after dark, in order to conserve any stored energy until the daylight returns the day after. If it happens gradually we can and will adapt. It is only if it is allowed to happen very quickly, that problems and anarchy may come.
