Time to ditch the pound and join the world's strongest currency? Or have we missed the boat?
Below extracts from todays Independent Today a euro is worth 80p, an all-time high against the pound. The 17 per cent fall since last February has come about as the euro has powered ahead on the strength of its member economies, while the pound has slumped, most recently because of the knock-on effects of the sub-prime collapse in the US. After a shaky start in 1999, when the economies of the 11 participating states were lurching downward, the euro has become a totemic success for the European project and has been rising against the pound for more than a year. The euro's surge may spur new theories from economists that the currency of the eurozone will become the main international unit of currency as early as 2015, upsetting almost the best part of a century of dominance of the dollar. So what? This is now. What about in two year's time? Or ten year's time? They can keep their mickey mouse money, bring back £sd! I particularly liked the half crowns and threepenny bits. Real coins, not washers!

Stormy as the article says," The euro's surge may spur new theories from economists that the currency of the eurozone will become the main international unit of currency as early as 2015, upsetting almost the best part of a century of dominance of the dollar."

Can anyone remember the reason we did not join the Euro, when offered.
I have just bought £150 worth, at 1.16 (for notes)

Speculation Graham, speculation! We should not only NEVER embrace the euro-rouble, we should get out of the EU and go it alone, as our Scandinavian cousins have done.

I am with Logical on this one. I never understood why central government decided that a pound on a small island, could ever match the power of a major currency.
However, the joining to the Euro was opposed by the major Banks, who had a large say in the matter. They, of course, were making, and now still are, about 20% of their profits from foreign exchange. If we had joined the Euro, a major slice of those profits would have disappeared as it would have been unnecessary to buy a different currency when travelling to Europe.

The pound and the euro are heading for parity. We'll end up getting bounced in on terrible terms instead of our own choosing. Have you forgotten when one man took the pound on and won? The George Soros / Norman Lamont (Cameron was his side kick) debacle? |

There will come a time in the not too distant future when we will be presented with a choice - maintain the half-arsed Little Englander xenophobia that has marred our foreign relations for far too long and head for oblivion or become a fully functioning part of the EU and be in a place where we can be confident in the face of world pressures. Let's hope we have the right government so we take the right path when the time arrives.
