Suggestions for improvements Thread, Favicon

The site could have one. Just something to make the site look individual in the bookmarks toolbar....

Well . . . Ahem . . .

Don't like to say this - - - but on my favourites bar in Firefox 3 there already is a little red square with IDF50 in it.

I presume this is a favicon ?

Or am I wrong again ?

I have Firefox 3 but no 'IDF50' favicon (all others are OK). I'll look into why the IDF50 one is not showing for me.

Thanks .

Edit: Same with a clean new Firefox Profile (no extensions or bookmarks import). The same in IE too. Hmm...

Further edit:
Same on my wife's computer. Same security set-up as on mine but I'd already tried turning off all measures for a while on my computer as a test. Still no favicon.

Mart,

I'm running Firefox 3 and my bookmark does show an icon.
Can't say where yours is different, of course.

I Have a Favicon on my website, but as I link to my site via a domain name it does not show.
However it does show if you use the direct link below.

index.htm

Dont ask why, I have not worked that out yet.
PS. I dont see the IDF one either.

As a matter of interest the other day, I slipstreamed SP3 into my XP installation disk, resulting in an installation disk that doesn't need SP3 installing separately. Anyway that's as clean as an installation gets. Whilst in this condition, I thought I'd try this site. No security or other programs were installed.

There was no favicon. I kind of suspected this would be the case because I wasn't getting the favicon on our other computer. So, what's left? A modem, a router, and the ISP. I can't see it's going to be the modem or router but wonder if the ISP could have a bearing, or even just the ISP's server in my area? The way it handles pages or something. Anyone else using Virgin Media cable broadband in the Guildford area?

As said, favicons for other sites are showing OK. So a mystery. Not a serious issue but a bit strange.

It's a hell of a mystery to me and I set up the favicon, it shows up on my Mac (Safari) but not on my PC (IE)

There's another vBulletin site here where the favicon is showing OK. I wonder what could be different? I could always use the Favicon Picker extension for Firefox but I'm not too worried about having one. Just something mentioned because, having never seen a favicon, I thought the site didn't have one .

I made a favicon for my site, saved it as 'favicon.ico' and put it in the site's root directory. It wouldn't show. After a bit of research on the subject, I found this code:

<link rel="shortcut icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" >

I pasted this in the index page header. After holding the Control button down* while pressing the 'Refresh' button, the favicon appeared in the bookmark and Address Bar. Other codes wouldn't work.

It looks like I'd have to put the code in all the pages for the favicon to show throughout the site. Either that or put it in the stylesheet and provide a reference to it in the header of all pages.

Don't know if this is useful information for IDF50 but it worked for me. The favicon shows in Firefox 3.0 and IE8 Beta 2.

* Instructs the browser to get a fresh copy of the page from the server rather than use the one in cache.
