Default Registering under multiple names

Hi there,

I belong to a few other forums & one of them has been bombarded with one person registering under 14 different names. What a mess he/she has succeeded in creating.

I have suggested to Admin that they ban the IP numbers. It seems to me that a board would have the ability to recognize the same IP number & prevent it from registering again.

I've been a member of that forum for almost 5 years & I don't recall whether or not I had to have my email address verified before I could post, the way I did with this forum.

What I am asking is, what would happen if I were to register under another name. Would my IP number be recognized & prevent me from doing this? :?:

Thanks for whatever enlightenment you can cast upon this situation.

oneofyou

I am no Techie but what I have read, depending who your ISP is, that some retain the same IP address, while others issue a different IP address every time you logon.
If this is fact or not I dont know, but it could be a reason how some people can register more than once.
I think a fixed IP address would be spotted if they tried to register under another user name.

I think some of us know the forum and the person you are referring to, and I share your concern. Let us hope our Forum is not wrecked in the same way.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for the response. I will look into how many different IP addresses I can have with my ISP & then maybe I can make some sense of this. I know I have that option.

Hi Ashlan,

I was told about this forum by a friend from the other forum. Rest assured that I am never going to post anything about this forum in there....wouldn't want that kook in here.

I think I belong to that forum...no, I'm not that person! There are more than one person on that forum who has adopted different IDs over the year or so I've been a member there. You don't want or need that problem here.

BTW, most dial-up ISPs have non-static numbers (change each time you dial-up), but cable and DSL numbers are usually static. So if you see the same IP number consistently for several usernames, then it could be the same individual.

Hi,

I look at everyone who has applied to register and decide whether we should have them or not. If someone could PM me as to who it is it might make things easier for me. I also belong to several forums and can hazard a guess who it is but again it could be one of several.

This is a resurrected post from nearly four months ago.
Is there a reason to believe that this is recurring again now.
Or is it just a responce to the original post, please let us know.
