In retrospect, he was a colossal although exploited talent and I just wish that I had appreciated his music more all those years ago.
That's exactly right. I did appreciate him and even have his autograph and I was saddened to see the way he was exploited

While mum and dad were still listening to dance bands and Bing Crosby etc. it was great to hear something new that seemed to be aimed at teenagers. Someone we could relate to. They felt threatened by him but I felt elated.

Discovered Elvis when I was about 13 down at the church youth club. Someone played his Blue Suede Shoes record, the place went crazy including the Vicar.

I can honestly say that Elvis and girls, discovered them at the Church Youth Club as well, were two of the biggest influences on my life.

Elvis or Cliff?
No contest - Elvis every time.
One of my favourites was King Creole and Love Me Tender.
It was a shame how he ended his days but he will be remembered long after we've gone.
Thursday night down the Jive Club in the Church Hall would not have been the same without Elvis. Happy Days.
Another favourite -

YouTube - Elvis Presley - An American Trilogy (Live 1973)

For me it was Cliff, Cliff, Adam Faith, Adam Faith after Bing, Satchmo and Frank. I loved them.
Always thought Elvis couldn't control his breathing properly. Liked him but never a fan. Still not, though I have several of his albums.
Love me Tender a fave as is In the Ghetto
The pic is his piano I photographed last year in Nashville.

Yes I love Elvis, he was unique I think and none of his many impersonators can do him justice. I too saw the recording studios where he made his first record sat at his piano and also went to his home ,Graceland. We were told that even now every day, soft toys and flowers arrive to place on his grave there sent from fans all over the world. Amazing.

Church Youth Clubs for dancing? Not the one I joined at 13yrs old! I only joined so that I could use their tennis club and the only dancing was at the Socials, all ages went, the dances were things like the veleta, the palais glide, etc.

Oh boy, does that date me!

But sorry Elvis, didn't like him, Bill Haley was good though!

I was allowed to go to the Jive club just because it was in a church hall but if My Mum had known that there were teddy boys there, with flick knives, she would have had a heart attack. Mind you I never ever saw a fight. One of the boys called " Dario Widdicombe" ( yes, honestly, that was his name ) looked just like Elvis with his dark black hair swept back in a D.A. and he was very popular. He never ever glanced my way needless to say.
Also the dancing was non stop all evening and I used to wear tight black trousers, my Dad's sloppy sweater and bop boots. Or, my Mum's pleated skirt with loads of paper nylon petticoats underneath. A walking lampshade my Dad used to call me.
Cool eh?
JJ
PS - I loved Adam Faith - saw him live & he had the bluest eyes but was quite short.

Met Adam a few times, even had coffee with him (he paid). Or should I say Terry Needham (he was 'off-duty' as Adam). Never got to hear him 'live' though. He wasn't THAT short, not tall, but reasonable. Fabulous smile, fabulous hands (great for pouring milk haha)
