I too have had prostrate problems. I am aged 67. As my father died of prostrate cancer [it may be hereditary] I had regular PSA checks. About two years ago my PSA started to go up. It was enough to cause the medicos to investigate further. However I was passed from doc to and doc examined in a filthy clinic and was worried about getting an infection form the third world facilities and lack of hygene in Leeds. So I went to Holland for further investigation. I saw the top man in Rotterdam. He did a biopsy and found some nasty active cancer cells. He discussed the options for me.There were two. 1.) Have the whole thing cut out OR 2.) Have radiation treatment. The advice was 1.) because if cancer comes back you can have a second chance with the radiation. If I went for option 2.) and it didn't work then surgery would be very difficult as the tissues harden up due to the radiation. So I had the operation [about 18 months ago]and have been fine ever since. I now have a slight leakage when I sneeze or laugh but I wear a pad and it is no big deal. I am happy that the Good Lord has given me more years on this earth to do good like give you guys the benefit of my experience. I hope I have been of some help. By the way Holland is free of MRSA at least when I was last there.

Thank you phellyer for your input and the detail you provided.
Yes there are two options, some can have the choice as given above, or not depending on the treatment that is right for your particular problem. I was informed that Radio Therapy was the best treatment for mine, not surgery. So you have to place yourself in the hands of the experts and Addenbrooks is one of the main treatment Hospitals. I have done 4 weeks of therapy, 3 weeks left to go to the finish.

Just a bit more information... I don't know about Addenbrookes but there is a Hospital in Birmingham that is very good with a high level of expertise. They do the prostratectomy using robotic techniques. Mine was by this method in Rotterdam and my doc is in touch with his counterpart in Birmingham. By this method you can be out in a couple of days. But don't think its that easy. I felt lousy and was incontinent for a long time. I don't think you can get the robotic technique anywhere else in the UK other than Birmingham. The incontinence is discouraging but it can be overcome with regular exercises and time. Don't be discouraged. Another good point about Rotterdam is that there was a high level of proffesionalism with all levels of staff working together in harmony. Hospital was spotlessly clean. And I can contact my doc by email anytime, unlike here in the UK.

I am weighing up these options at the present time. Thank you so much for this information. I see the consultant at Royal free Hampstead.

Hi Mel
The options that you will be offered or not, depends on the treatment that is right for you personally. I am coming to the end of my RadioTherapy, 5 days left to go. That was the best treatment for me, I did not fancy surgery, it was not an option available to me anyway. The appointments schedule looks daunting at first. I actually started my treatment on the17 July and, finish on the 4 September going every day except weekends. It is surprising how fast that time goes though and, yes your life is on hold for that period of time. Take it as it comes day by day and don't worry about it, you will be surprised how common this problem is.

Well today Monday the 4th Sept marks the end
of my Radio Therapy after 35 days of treatment. So tomorrow I will be back to some sort of normality in my daily life apart from side effects. They may last weeks or months but thats the price you have to pay to help solve the problem. But the side effects are manageable and will slowly subside in time, but nothing to worry about. So I now have no excuse, not to get the lawn mower out.

I am sure that all of us sincerely hope that the side effects are not too onerous, and you can resume your normal daily life again. Hope the treatment is successful, and you have no further problems. You might like to know that our next door neighbour is now 98 years of age. When we were married and came to live here 48 years ago, he could not attend our wedding because he was in hospital with prostrate cancer. As you know the treatment has improved immeasurably since then.

Well its now a year since I was hospitalized for a week,
because I could not pass water due to infection. The problem found after numerous tests was due to Prostate Cancer. Its now 3 months since my Radio Therapy ended on the 4th September. Most of the side effects have gone away now, but I have to say I don't feel as good as I did before the Radio Therapy. After a few bottles of Red Wine and some Famous Grouse over Christmas, should solve the remaining issue.
