I have a gadget (Which comes with a program) called Video Mate C200. It costs about £25 and I think I bought it from CPC. It's not exactly user friendly, but after a few attempts you can make a brilliant DVD copy. You can add music, text, and all the usual special effects.

Hi Pat
You will need some software like WinX DVD Author which I believe was available on Give Away for the Day, to convert the files into VOB files and then burn them to disc.

Hi Bert, The video file you now have from the VHS tape, do you know what format it is?

A right click or even hover the cursor over the file will usually tell you at the end of the title you gave it, the format usually is in brackets as in (WMV) or (AVI) or similar. In full it could be "My Home Video" (WMV)

The format is important as it will need to be changed to convert it to burn to a DVD in the first place.

However there are many software programs that can do both, if we know the original format, one of us will probably be able to find the appropriate software.

Default VHS to DVD

Thanks Nev, I am very new to this and all I can find is MPG file and PLS file, though when on playback it shows AV1 on the screen. Thanks very much for your help.

Hi again Bert, that is good that type of format is easy to handle, I must ask though is the drive you have a DVD RW, with either a - or + sign in the middle?
If so, I found a page full of free DVD burning software on Google. here are a couple that may provide what you need-
free dvd copy cd dvd burner audio data shrink dvd - burn4free freeware

Free DVD Burner [DVD Flick]

I haven't tried them myself mind, so cannot say which is best as they both look like they will do the job.

Another thing to consider is if the DVD you want to make is a long one, you need a DOUBLE LAYER DVD
