Feeling a little jaded, we decided we needed a break, it has seemed a long long winter this year not especially cold but dank and dull, a few quick e-mail to our friends Jill and Brian who retired to Spain about 3 years ago, and to book flights, we were off, bags packed and Euros at the ready.
The hounds were taken to the boarding kennels [the only advantage when the kids lived at home] We have a small local airport only 10miles away from us which offers, cheap flights to Spain, so after only about 2 hours we arrived in Spain, our friends picked us up, and took us to the apartment they rent out, in the small town of Oliva in the Valencia region, the holiday had began. The weather was glorious, the sun shone but it was not too hot, when we have been before ,later in the year , we have both wilted in the heat, we have used the buses to get around but this time we walked every where. Oliva is a small town, not a resort, not many people speak English but we get by, with lots of smiles and the locals good nature. We love the beach ,living as we do about as far away from the sea that you can get in the UK. We have been to the beach many times but we decided we would walk instead of getting the local bus, walking a long side the small river, which runs from the town through orange groves, it was magical ,a slight aroma of orange blossom remained, and you could see the oranges forming, it was so peaceful walking beside a gently flowing river with Ducks and Egrets, accompanied by the constant croaking of frogs, dawdling along, eventually reaching a deserted beach. Where we stayed, reading and relaxing, in the warm spring sunshine, we did venture in to the sea but quickly changed our mind as it was freezing and your legs went numb. We would walk home, stopping off for a cold beer on the way. Meeting our friends in the evening for a meal, a chat and plenty of wine. On the Monday before we left we went to Valencia on the train, which were very cheap clean and efficient. A Magnificent city, it reminded us of Paris but with a Spanish touch the railway station had oranges, in the plaster work on the outside, the buildings had balconies and you could imagine, Spanish ladies wearing mantilla and peeping from behind a fan. All too soon our holiday came to a close and we came home refreshed and ready to face the world.
