Default I like the Artists Studio

Hi - I am just finding my way round the site and found the Artists Studio. I have tried painting and really enjoy it but would love to master the technique of painting realistic details like a glass of water, dog/cat's fur, fabric. Any tips on painting these details would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hello Tish, glad you enjoy the Artists Studio.

I hope you'll be encouraged to post something you've done on the thread.

As for giving advice on the things you are asking for, I don't know if I personally, would be compitent enough to do so, but 'if' you were to see something you liked, and wanted to know how I achieved it, I would happily tell you.

Do you paint or draw?

Default Thank you

Actually I noticed two of your paintings which I really like. Arte Nouveau - I like the softness of it and the way you have handled the painting of the dress, particularly the transparent fabric. I also like The Dervish and agree with another poster - it would make a very good book illustration. I love the vitality of it and the pots are very well executed.

I haven't painted for some time myself but am planning to make time during the winter evenings ahead to get the paintbrushes out. Looking at this site and the really good work which people are doing is making me want to get started again even more.

Last Christmas I treated myself to some pastel pencils and some water colour pencils - found the water colour pencils quite easy to use but struggled with the pastels.

Love your site name by the way.

I hadn't painted for about ten years, until last year, but I'm slowly getting back into it.

I love water colour pencils, and use them a lot, but I struggle with pastel pencils, although I like using pastels. They're ok used with pastels if I want to add a bit of fine detail.

I'm flattered you like my pictures, it's kind of you to mention them.

Oh, and by the way, my granddaughter gave me my name, she saw me in the garden one day, and said I was like a Fatfairy at the bottom of the garden (kids are so honest)and I'm just over five foot. Anyway...it made me smile.

I hope you'll soon be painting

Goodluck Tish

Default Painting

Ten years - a long break but you are obviously a talented artist. I tend to paint obsessively and then lose interest only to go back to it months later. I think it is because I tend to paint at the dining room table - good daylight in that room - and so tidy everything away when I am expecting visitors. I would probably paint more if everything was still out and ready to use. Anyway, I have a giant canvas and quite fancy trying to paint a seaside theme - I have the picture in my head just need to get it done! Will probably use acrylics because of the bold colours. I know some people prefer to cover their canvas with colour first and then paint on it but I like painting directly on the white canvas.

When I finally get round to doing it - I will post a pic - providing it comes out okay of course!

Default Hi Kingy

Thanks for your encouragement - you are right of course. I tend to paint something, be reasonably happy with it and then find myself for evermore looking at it and finding fault!

I have certainly enjoyed looking through the art studio. The poetry and prose is also really good. I am gradually working my way through the different forums - having a great time

Well, I have learned something new - fatfairy's name origin.

I agree with you, the Arte Nouveau picture is lovely.
I am not an artist - if only.
But I love looking at the work of those who can draw and paint.
