As you can see I cannot draw but I like the way you can blend the colours . I've got very dirty fingers though

These are chalk pastels & I find them easier than paint. I have oil pastels too but they are more like kids crayons - not so keen.
I found the chalk pastels difficult to "draw" with but I have now bought some pastel pencils but haven't used them yet.
Makes an awful mess - the chalk dust but am I bovered? NO

What sort of paper are you using JJ ?

One way to avoid too much mess on your hands is to start at the topleft (if you are right handed) and work towards the opposite bottom corner

Very good effort for a first try

That's lovely JJ...To stop the chalk dust getting everywhere
put newspaper under your paper before you start and fold the borrom up about 1". Then slip your paper in and it will catch the dust in it....if you have it on a slight angle of course...the girls at Art wear thin rubber gloves to save their hands getting messy..
Also keep your chalks in some rice, not ordinary rice..I cant think of the word but you will know...and it will keep them clean while working with them...
What colour is your paper JJ,? there is some pretty colours
out but it's not cheap to buy....

Well done.. :P

You are all very kind & thanks for the comments.
I used a very cheap watercolor pad as that is all I had but will now investigate some "proper" paper.
I work on an easel so I put a tea towel under the pad which caught most of the chalk - ruined the tea towel though
Is it better to spray with hair-spray frequently to fix it or just when it is finished?

Jeannie, Lookat Daler Murano paper. It is not particularly cheap but I find it takes the pastel very well.

The purists say you shouldn't spray to fix at all, because they claim it mutes the colours

I find it worth while to buy Daler-Rowney "Perfix".

A bit more expensive than hair spray but some hairsprays discolour the pastel.

If you have done some work and find that the next layer of pastel isn't taking well then it's a good idea to spray and you will find the next layer will takeok, but of course it wont blend with the earlier coats, only cover them.

Hope these tips help

Alan

By the way JJ, the rice to clean the
crayons and chalks is (rice flour) just roll
them in it and keep it in a container for next time,,sorry I couldn't remember it before..
